Scoliosis Screening of 5th Graders:  On January 28th, your school nurse will screen 5th graders for scoliosis, a sideways curve or twist to the spine.  The purpose is to recognize, at the earliest stages, any deviation from normal, so that the need for treatment can be determined.  Scoliosis screening in now required annually by law, for school children in the State of Washington grades 5, 7 and 9.  The procedure is a very simple one.  We observe the student's posture while standing and bending forward. This is done behind a screen for privacy. Boys and girls are screened separately.  It is suggested that girls wear a bra, sports bra or bathing suit during screening. Boys will just remove their shirts.  If a curve is suspected, you will be notified so that you may get further evaluation from your own physician.  You may refuse screening for your child by stopping by the office to fill out an exemption.  Please call your school nurse, Terry Ostendorf, if you have any questions. 425-837-7930
