How can I tell if it's time to seek
help?
When you feel like you can't
do it alone, when you feel there's no where to turn, when you worry and don't
seem to find answers, when it's not getting any better, it may be helpful to
talk with an experienced, trained professional.
According to the American Association of Counseling, "the term
professional counselor is used to represent those persons who have earned a
minimum master's degree and possess professional knowledge and demonstrable
skills...in order to facilitate human development and adjustment throughout the
life span."
To select a counselor to work with your family, begin by gathering
information. Your family doctor or pediatrician can be a good place to
start. Often family practitioners work with a team of providers. Although
your school counselor can provide a list of community
providers who have worked with our parents, these individuals and
agencies and support groups cannot not recommended, investigated or monitored by the
Issaquah School District.
Many insurance and coverage plans include some level of coverage for
counseling services. In addition, government-sponsored health coverage
programs such as Medicaid provide varying levels of coverage. If you do
not have coverage, many practitioners and community mental health centers offer
a sliding fee scale to clients.
Taking the time to interview a prospective counselor can
help you find the right "fit" for your family. Ask about: his/her credentials (training, licenses);
the length of time in practice; areas of specialization (working with children
and families is a specialty); what kind of work you will be doing together; how
he work will be effective for your situation and how long might it last; and
ask about fees--will your insurance/HMO coverage be accepted, will your
insurance be billed directly, is there a sliding scale fee/payment plan option
if you are paying for the services?
